A passport is a travel document, usually issued by a country's government to its citizens, that certifies the identity and nationality of its holder primarily for the purpose of international travel. Standard passports may contain information such as the holder's name, place and date of birth, photograph, signature, and other relevant identifying information.
It usual take 4-6 weeks for the process to be completed.
The passport application process is an exhaustive one, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has made arrangement for quick dispensation of passports under the ‘Tatkaal scheme’. Known as Tatkaal passports, applicants needing to travel abroad urgently can apply for and receive their passport within a few days. The cost is twice the cost of standard passport
There is no difference whatsoever between a normal passport and a Tatkal passport. The difference lies in the way they were made. A normal passport is basically less prioritized than a tatkal passport and hence gets delivered later than it. So if you urgently need a passport who can apply for TAKAL passport online.
Any Person who is a Citizen of India by being born in India, being born elsewhere but whose parents are of Indian Origin or who have been granted citizenship through a naturalization process can apply for Indian Passport.
Minors between 15 to 18 years of age can apply either for a 10-year validity passport or they can apply for a passport, which is valid till they attain the age of 18 years. Fee for a 10-year validity passport is higher than fee for a passport, which is valid till they attain the age of 18 years. A 10-year validity passport cannot be issued to applicants without police verification on submission of parent's passport. If passport is required on an urgent basis, they can apply under Tatkaal scheme.
The passport is dispatched by India Post through Speed Post to the present address of the applicant.
As per the process passport is dispatched to the present address mentioned in the passport application form. We request you to submit an application at your respective Regional Passport Office (RPO) to update your present address. Please carry your present address proof along with a request letter while visiting the RPO. RPO may decide accordingly taking into consideration the facts placed before him.
1. Affidavit with details of how a passport got damaged or was lost (Annexure 'L')
2. No Objection Certificate (Annexure 'M') / Prior Intimation Letter (Annexure 'N')
3. Current address (proof) / Address Proof / Identity Proof
4. Police report (FIR)
5. Semi-literate or literate applicants: Affidavit sworn before a notary stating the place and date of birth (Annexure 'A')
6. Photocopy of the first and last pages of old passport (ECR/Non-ECR page), if available (optional)
7. Passport-size photographs
Senior Citizens can be issued a passport on post police verification basis if they submit copy of child's (Age greater than 18) passport, who is staying abroad (with page having parent's name) as an additional document along with their application form.

Based on the displayed status, you may contact the respective speed post center or your nearest Speed Post center to confirm the current status of your consignment. In case the Speed Post authorities are unable to locate your passport consignment or they have returned your passport consignment to the sender then please contact the respective Regional Passport Office for further assistance.
